Assessment

Summative assessment will be replaced by three assessment components:

o       Workplace-Based Assessment (WBA)

this is assessment of performance (see below).
It will take place throughout the three years

o       Applied Knowledge Test (AKT)

A machine-marked test
Candidates are expected have some freedom of choice about when to sit it

o       Clinical Skills Assessment (CSA)

Likely to be an OSCE with up to 14 stations.
It will probably take place in the third year

Examinations and other assessments

The difference between examinations and assessments in the workplace principally relates to the relationship between competence and performance.

Competence (what a doctor can do) is necessary but not sufficient for performance (what a doctor does do)

As experience increases so performance based assessment in the workplace becomes more important
