GMC Curricular Outcomes

Graduates must be able to show that they can meet the following outcomes.

Good clinical care

bulletKnow about and understand the following.
bulletOur guidance on the principles of good medical practice and the standards of competence, care and conduct expected of doctors in the UK.
bulletThe environment in which medicine is practised in the UK.
bulletHow errors can happen in practice and the principles of managing risks.
bulletKnow about, understand and be able to apply and integrate the clinical, basic, behavioural and social sciences on which medical practice is based.
bulletBe able to perform clinical and practical skills safely.
bulletDemonstrate the following attitudes and behaviour.
bulleti. Recognise personal and professional limits, and be willing to ask for help when necessary.
bulletii. Recognise the duty to protect patients and others by taking action if a colleague's health, performance or conduct is putting patients at risk.

Maintaining good medical practice

bulletBe able to gain, assess, apply and integrate new knowledge and have the ability to adapt to changing circumstances throughout their professional life.
bulletBe willing to take part in continuing professional development to make sure that they maintain high levels of clinical competence and knowledge.
bulletUnderstand the principles of audit and the importance of using the results of audit to improve practice.
bulletBe willing to respond constructively to the outcome of appraisal, performance review and assessment.

Relationships with patients

bulletKnow about and understand the rights of patients.
bulletBe able to communicate effectively with individuals and groups.
bulletDemonstrate the following attitudes and behaviour.
bulletAccept the moral and ethical responsibilities involved in providing care to individual patients and communities.
bulletRespect patients regardless of their lifestyle, culture, beliefs, race, colour, gender, sexuality, disability, age, or social or economic status.
bulletRespect the right of patients to be fully involved in decisions about their care, including the right to refuse treatment or to refuse to take part in teaching or research.
bulletRecognise their obligation to understand and deal with patients' healthcare needs by consulting them and, where appropriate, their relatives or carers.

Working with colleagues

bulletKnow about, understand and respect the roles and expertise of other health and social care professionals.
bulletBe able to demonstrate effective teamworking and leadership skills.
bulletBe willing to lead when faced with uncertainty and change.

Teaching and training

Health

bulletgraduates must be aware of the health hazards of medical practice, the importance of their own health and the effect that their health has on their ability to practise safely and effectively as a doctor.
