Competence in diagnosis and management of cold surgical conditions e.g.: abscesses, pumps, varicose veins, PR bleeding, foot ulcers.

Competence in recognizing &acting upon acute surgical conditions; e.g. acute abdomen, DVT, torsion of testes, hematemesis, etc.

Competence in performing practical surgical procedures e.g. stitches, dressing, proper use of proctoscope, urinary catheter, etc

Referrals:  demonstrate understanding when referral to hospital is indicated

Department of Orthopaedics

Competence in diagnosis and management of common orthopaedic conditions e.g.: sprains, synovitis, back pain,, osteoarthritis, etc.

Competence in diagnosis and management of uncommon but important orthopaedic conditions e.g. fractures, torn ligament, joint dislocation, etc.

Competence in performing practical procedures e.g. intra, periarticular injections, application of supporting strapping, etc

Therapeutics: demonstrate understanding of the properties and use of NSAIDs & others.

Referral: recognize occasions when referral for hospital & or physiotherapy is indicated.

Department Activities: 15%

Department of Paediatrics

Competence in diagnosis and management of common paediatrics conditions e.g.: bronchial asthma, pneumonia, GE, undescended testes, neonatal jaundice, common infections like chickenpox, rubella, measles, etc.  

Competence in diagnosis and management of less common but important conditions e.g.: meningitis, epiglottis, FTT, heart murmurs, etc.

Competence in performing practical procedures e.g. use of PFM, venupuncture, APGAR score, bladder catheterization, developmental assessment, screening for CHD, etc

Therapeutics:  familiar with principals of prescribing as uniquely applicable to children

Referral: recognize occasions when referral for hospital & or physiotherapy is indicated.

Competence in performing practical procedures: e.g. cauterization with liquid nitrogen, all types of dressing, use of magnifying lenses in skin examination

Therapeutics: understanding the indication &potential danger (certain drugs e.g. Topical Steroids, Retin-A preparation, etc -Referral: recognize occasions when referral for specialist opinion is indicated

Department Activities: 15%

Department of Ophthalmology

Competence in diagnosis and management of common ophthalmic conditions e.g.: conjunctivitis, blepharitis, errors of refractions, minor traumas, pterygium, squint.. .etc

Competence in diagnosis and management of less common but important conditions e.g.: glaucoma, major trauma, keratitis, herpes zestier of the corneal ulcers, cataract, retinopathies, etc

Competence in performing practical procedures

e.g. -use of visual charts, use of florescent eye drops, use of ophthalmoscope, removal of rubbing lashes, etc

Therapeutics: understand the indications and use of common topical eye preparations e.g. steroids, ‘dyes’,

Referral: recognize occasions when referral for specialist opinion is indicated; e.g. sudden loss of vision, major trauma

Department Activities: 15%

Department of Ear-Nose-Throat

Attitude 25%

Competence in diagnosis and management of common ENT conditions; e.g. ear aches, glue ear, sinusitis, rhinitis, vertigo, epistaxis, etc.

Competence in diagnosis and management of less common but important conditions e.g.: foreign body, mastoiditis, orbital cellulites, etc

Competence in performing practical procedures e.g. ear wash, nasal packing, readings of x ray and audiograms, etc

Therapeutics: familiarity with indications and use of common topical and systematic preparation used in ENT

Referral: recognize occasions when referral to ENT specialist is indicated; e.g. tonsillectomy.

Department Activities: 15%

Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology

Competence in diagnosis and management of less common but important conditions e.g.: labour, ectopic, uterine prolapse, infertility, tumours, etc

Competence in performing practical procedures; e.g. vaginal bimanual examination, high vaginal swab, speculum, normal delivery, cautery of cervix, use of ovulation chart application of IUCD, etc

Therapeutics: familiarity with principles of as appropriately especially during pregnancy & lactation

Referral: recognize occasions when referral for hospital is indicated.

Department Activities: 15%

Department of Emergency Medicine

Competence in diagnosis and management of common emergency conditions e.g.: resuscitation, unconscious patient, shock, acute MI, acute heart failure, acute severe asthma, pneumothorax, hypo-hyperglycemia, acute retention of urine, acute abdomen, convulsion, etc

Competence in performing practical procedures: venupuncture, ECG performing &interpretation, urine catheterization, Notable stitching, pleural taping, etc.

Referral: recognize occasions when referral for emergency department is indicated.
